Areas of Focus

Sports and Development

In sports we are targeting mainly the youth and children in various sporting declines. We train and organize tournaments with various educative themes that touches on issues that are within the society some of this cross cutting issues are HIV/AIDS, drug abuse among others and this encourages the youth and children to relate with the issues as well as developing sporting careers. We target football teams from under 10 to under 20 years, volleyball, athletics and tae kwon do. We use branded footballs with messages.

Achievements

The foundation has been able to organize an under 14 football tournament, volleyball and also supporting senior teams with uniforms and footballs donation.

Partnership

You can partner with us through sponsoring various sports tournaments, donating sports gears for both indoor and outdoor games, training of coaches, adopting of a team and donating branded footballs to schools and teams

We support persons with disability to participate in various sports as well sensitizing them on advantages of sports as one way of breaking the barrier between the able and them. We also organize "Henry Wanyoike Hope for the Future Run" that encompasses every one with equal rewards both for abled and disabled.

Currently we are developing an "academy or camp" that will purely be for people with disability (blind upcoming athletes) at Naivasha and also for training their guides who currently are very few in Kenya and Africa at large. This will be only camp that will be exclusive for visually impaired in the country.

The Environment

The environmental issues have become global politics where each and every like minded government have prioritized environment into key ministries. This is as a result of organizations that have relentlessly advocated for environmental conservation due to high massive degradation and negligence by the leaders to talk about on conservation. The environmental issues cannot be just wished away as the world is coming into terms with global warming and its effects in most parts of the world thus going a step further by many of the world leaders ratifying the UN led Kyoto protocol to minimize and to account for global gases each country emits in the air. Although this long way to go the like minded organizations like the HWF has continuously kept the high profile by been in the forefront in environmental conservation and awareness.

Supporting the Disabled

People with various disabilities in Kenya have been shunned for along time and it is like kind of believe that having a child who has a disability is a curse and thus many of communities either dump the baby or abandon them in hospitals. It also a trend that even getting a partner with a disability is also a curse to the clan or educating one is a waste of resources.10% of Kenyan population is persons with disabilities and the trend is lamely changing with the government having enacted the 2003 disability ACT which stipulates the rights of persons with the disabilities.

The implementation of act is also in a tortoise speed and thus calls for all like minded stakeholders to come up with programs that can advocate for the physically challenged. Henry Wanyoike Foundation has come up various programs specifically targeting persons with disability like:

a) Socio-Economic Empowerment
We give grants to individuals and also groups to start income generating programs like curio shops, shoe making, candle making etc. this program has a primary objective of empowering the persons to reduce dependence.

b) Education
Although the government has a free primary education for all children the children with disability are not catered fully and this is due to the few number of special schools and also special teachers. We therefore support them by sponsoring education fees in various private schools as well as higher education.

c) Advocacy of Disability Rights
We network with various civil societies to engage all stakeholders and sensitizing them on issues of disability as well trying to equalize opportunities of them in various sectors. We are currently advocating for "disability fund" to be created like the youth fund, women fund etc.

We are rolling out a project targeting the opinion leaders and then the community under a civic education program on rights of the people with disability and awarding companies that have demonstrated the plight of people with disability through equal employment opportunities. The first recipient of HWF recognition plaque was Oserian Flowers Company in 2007.

Partnership

We believe through partnership in any level can help us develop and scale the various programs and we encourage organizations individuals corporate and churches to pick any of above program and partner with us. We also encourage your advice and donations in kind or cash.
